Debut of New Amphitheatre at Mead Botanical Garden
Sunday, December 9 marked the debut performance of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra at Powell Design Group’s newly completed amphitheater at Mead Botanical Garden in Winter Park.
Dubbed “The Grove”, the amphitheater features a 60 foot by 40 foot stage, a dramatic overhead fabric sail, and wooden trellises with Florida limestone bases on each side. The landscaped area in front of the stage can accommodate several hundred people, and the amphitheater will host not only FSYO concerts, but other area musical and theatrical performances, as well as weddings and community gatherings.
The Grove, built on land that was once a city landfill, is adjacent to a wetlands area and complements its beautiful natural setting, which is also home to a butterfly garden.
Construction of The Grove began in August, and cost approximately $700,000, with funds coming from the City of Winter Park as well as private donations.
